B.C. Glacier Ice Cave Experience
This is the bucket list adventure that tops all other bucket list adventures. See British Columbia from a different perspective. Embark on a helicopter flight through the spectacular Coast Mountains and enjoy magnificent views as you fly over endless mountains and valleys, waterfalls cascading over granite cliffs, turquoise rivers winding their way through lush temperate rainforests, and even the occasional herd of mountain goats or elk. During winter, these mountain landscapes are covered in a thick blanket of snow. Just when you think it can’t get any better, our glacier destination pops into view only minutes before we land. Step out of the helicopter and venture inside these secret ice caves for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Wander through perfectly formed ice caves and appreciate one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful works of art. Ice caves are formed by snowmelt during summer. The water from the melted snow follows gravity along the surface of the glacier until it finds a low point, a crack, a crevasse, or even a boulder sitting on top of the ice. Water acts quickly and tunnels its way through the glacier, eventually reaching the bottom where it follows the path of least resistance and exits the glacier. When the meltwater subsides, the tunnels, or caves, become accessible. These beautiful features won’t be around forever, so enjoy every little detail.
The striking turquoise-blue hue is a result of extremely dense ice from years of compression. The weight of the glacier forces out the tiny air pockets between the crystals, which means the ice absorbs a small amount of red light, leaving a stunning blue tint. After exploring the cave and admiring the intricate layers of ancient ice, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch with stunning mountain views.
